2025 Legislative Breakfast Reception: Advocating for Affordable Housing

On March 20, 2025, Habitat for Humanity of Tennessee hosted a successful Legislative Breakfast Reception, bringing together key leaders and advocates to champion affordable housing across the state.
We were honored to be joined by our gracious hosts—Senator Becky Massey, Representative Ryan Williams, and fellow members of the Habitat for Humanity of Tennessee Board of Directors—who continue to be steadfast supporters of our mission.
Habitat leaders from across Tennessee gathered to share the impact of their work and advocate for policies that expand access to affordable homeownership. We deeply appreciate the legislators who attended, taking the time to engage in meaningful discussions about the housing challenges facing Tennesseans and the vital role Habitat plays in addressing them.
Habitat for Humanity empowers families by providing affordable mortgages—a hand up not a handout —allowing homebuyers to invest in their futures. Through sweat equity, volunteer support, and financial education, our homeowners build strength, stability, and self-reliance. This partnership-based model reflects our core belief: everyone deserves a safe, decent place to call home.
We are grateful for the ongoing collaboration with policymakers and community leaders and look forward to continuing this important work together.
Why We Advocate
At Habitat for Humanity, we believe that a safe, affordable home is the foundation for a better future. Yet, too many Tennessee families face overwhelming housing costs that make it difficult to afford basic necessities. We advocate because:
Housing is essential to stability and economic mobility – Families in stable housing are better able to maintain employment, access healthcare, and support their children’s education.
The housing shortage affects everyone – A lack of affordable homes impacts workforce retention, economic growth, and community well-being.
Homeownership breaks the cycle of poverty – Affordable mortgages provide families with the opportunity to build wealth and create generational stability.
Smart housing policies strengthen communities – Investment in homeownership fosters engaged citizens, vibrant neighborhoods, and a stronger local economy.
The Urgent Need for Affordable Housing in Tennessee
1 in 8 households in Tennessee spends more than half of their income on housing, leaving little for essentials like food, healthcare, and education.
The state faces a shortage of 38,269 homes (both rental and for-sale), a 249% increase since 2014.
Homeownership strengthens communities—families who own their homes are more engaged in local schools, businesses, and civic activities.
Affordable homeownership fuels local economies—every $1 invested in housing generates $4 in economic activity.
Homeownership sets children up for success—kids of homeowners are 25% more likely to graduate high school and 116% more likely to graduate college.
